After World War II, why did the USSR want to control countries in Eastern Europe

Soviets motivated their will to control Eastern Europe with wanting to have a "Buffer Zone" - it would provide a defense from an attach from the East. (motivated by the last attach of Nazi Germany on Russia) Also, the USSR wanted to strengthen its position internationally and spread communism.
