8. if he has two shelves an they hold 16 each then 16 times 2 is 32. if he already has 24 on the shelf subtract that front 32 and it gives you 8.
well if you had 24 books and you needed to put them on 2 shelves and each shelf only holds 16, that is when you take 24-16 which equals 8. so 8 is your answer.
