An isotope are atoms which has the same number of protons. The difference is the number of neutrons. We can also say that isotopes are different forms of the atom hence has different molecular weight. The average atomic mass of carbon can be computed by getting the summation of the product of atomic masses and relative abundance of the isotopes.
