In scientific notation a number is written in the format:, eg 3.42 x 10^3 - a single digit then the decimal point followed by any other digits.  This is then followed by ten to the power of . . . If the 'ten to the power' is positive then the number is greater than one: of the 'ten to the power' is negative then the number is less than one.
