How is the electronic structure of sodium different from the electronic structure of chlorine?

Well, sodium is no. 11 whereas chlorine is element no. 17.  Na has 11 electrons in the ground state whereas Cl has 17.  Na is in the S-block of the periodic table so its valence shell is an S orbital whereas Cl is in the P-block thus its valence shell is a P orbital.
