In baseball, the distance of the paths between each pair of consecutive bases is 90 ft and the paths form right angles. How far does the ball need to travel if it is thrown from home plate directly to second base?

That's just the diagonal of the 90-ft square. It's also the hypotenuse of a right triangle with equal 90-ft legs.      Hypotenuse = √(90² + 90²) = √2(90²)  =  90 √2  =  127.3 ft .
