Patronymic names are names that are taken from the father or paternal ancestor sometimes added with suffix or prefix. example: Johnson - Son of John ; Adams - son of Adam Metronymic names are names that are taken from the mother or maternal ancestor with added suffix or prefix. example: Bettison - son of Betty ; Everson - son of Eve
