Scientific experiment are specially designed to test explanations for an observed phenomenon. A student decided to conduct an experiment to determine the effect that the amount of time spent in the sunlight has an overall growth of a plant. The student will conduct the experiment using two identical plants that will only spend different amounts of time in the sunlight. All the aspects needed for growth will remain identical for each. In the experiment described, what would the amount of water given to each plant be considered?

The amount of water given to each plant would have to be the same since only the exposure to sunlight will be varied so the water amount for each plant is identical or needs to be identical as in a controlled experiment only one factor should be varied to determine how that factor alone affects the in this case growth of the plant.
