Sheldon bought 4 1/2 kg of plant food. he used 1 2/3 kg on his strawberry plant and used 1/4 kg for his tomato plant. how many Kg of plant food did he have left. write one or more equations to show how you reached your answer.

First you need to change the denominators (bottom numbers) of the fraction to match each other. As you can see, all of those numbers can multiply to get twelve like so. 1/2= 6/12 2/3= 8/12 1/4= 3/12 Then you add your whole numbers to create improper fractions. You do this by multiplying the denominator and whole number and adding that solution to your numerator (top number) 4•12= 48 48+6= 54 4 6/12 = 54/12 1•12= 12 12+8= 20 1 8/12= 20/12 Then subtract the numerators to find the solution as an improper fraction 54-20=34-3= 31 31/12 is your answer. If you need it as a mixed fraction, figure out how many times 12 goes into 31 (2 times) 12•2= 24 31-24= 7 Sheldon had 2 7/12 of plant food left Hope this helps :)
