I think the people that time was carried away by realistic sounds and convincing radio program. I also think that those days were the hype of understanding more of scientific discoveries in space which moved the people's emotions. They can't really be blamed for believing, however, the program should have consistently notified the listeners that they are just listening to a sci-fi story.
