What is the significance of Odysseus telling the Cyclops his name is "Nobody"?

He told Polyphemus that his name is "Nobody", so when Polyphemus cried out for help, nobody come to help him. When he shouted to Cylcops for help, then they asked who's hurting you and Polyphemus replied "Nobody". In that way, it makes the other cyclops believe that  if Polyphemus was experiencing pain from "nobody", the only solution was with the gods.
