Why does the term "gilded age" accurately describe the period of the late 1800s?

because that century was gild or had something to do with something that they did to call it gilded age

Mark Twain invented the name "Gilded Age" for the late 1800's in a novel he published.At the time America was marked by greed and corruption despite the glittering wealth on the surface.
