why is the opposite of a positive number never be a positive number

Because, let's put it this way. If you have 10 apples, what is the exact opposite of that? You take away 10 apples, right? That means that now, you have -10 apples. Any positive number you have, if a question asks you what the opposite number is, add a negative sign, and there you go!
